Master's student Josh Perry has been tracking Mangrove (AKA Gray) Snapper, Lutjanus griseus, in Mississippi's waters to determine when (if) individuals from this population are moving offshore. The Eastern Pascagoula River distributary has a 15 m (~50 ft) channel that extends from the mouth of the distributary to Horn Island Pass. This channel provides persistent, high bottom salinity in the mouth of the distributary and has bulkheaded structure that provides year-round habitat for Mangrove Snapper. This provides recreational and sustenance anglers opportunity for this, generally more reef associated species, along shore. We are trying to determine how this population is connected to others in the northern Gulf of Mexico and when (both time of year and age of fish) a run to presumed spawning habitat off shore will occur.
So if you find a tagged individual please contact us! We will be happy to provide you with details on how long it has been at-large and provide you with a shirt.
